Protecting Students During The COVID-19 Crisis

Educators have always been at the front lines of detecting and reporting child abuse. Since the Covid-19 pandemic started, cases of child abuse have risen significantly while reports have dropped, making the role of educators in fighting abuse more critical now than ever. This webinar, presented by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of California, will equip teachers and administrators with the tools they need to detect, prevent, and report abuse of their students while teaching remotely during the pandemic. The presentation will focus on internet crimes against children, including trafficking in child sexual abuse material and sextortion, and will provide practical advice for teachers working in the online classroom.

Karen VanAusdal and Mary Hurley, from the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), provide information and resources to meet the social-emotional needs of both students and staff.

CASEL presented on key aspects of its SEL Roadmap for Opening Schools, which was developed to support school leaders SEL work in the current context of distance and hybrid learning with equity-focused SEL strategies.

Legal Clarity: Privacy, Liability and Confidentiality

School attorneys from Fagen, Friedman, and Fulfrost, LLP provide legal clarity, recommendations for communicating with staff and parents, sample templates and more. This webinar focused on privacy and confidentiality, as COVID-19 and the shift to digital learning have raised new liability concerns for site leaders. Specific topics include mandated reporting, cyberbullying, student camera use, class recording and implicit bias in the digital age.
