Equity Articles

Now, more than ever, there is a deep need to truly define the word “equity” in order to apply it as a lens to our policy and practice if we are to close these educational gaps. Defining equity requires us to reflect on our own personal and professional experiences in order to shift from “talking the talk” to “walking the walk.”
During its July meeting, the State Board of Education approved a revolutionary “English Learner Roadmap” to help California’s more than 1,000 school districts welcome, understand, and educate the diverse population of students who are learning English.
We are excited to announce that ACSA’s Equity Project has received a two-year grant from the California Collaborative for Educational Excellence to host a Professional Learning Network. CCEE is committed to supporting LEAs with resources and tools to assist them in implementing LCFF through their LCAPs and use of the California School Dashboard.

Defining Equity Exercise:

  1. Have everyone take two Post-it notes, and write down an “equitable” and “inequitable” moment in his/her professional and/or personal life, one on each note. Share with your team, listening openly to each person's experience.

  2. Discuss together: If your organization were to articulate a definition of equity, what would it say?
