Mullin Receives Friend of Public Education Award

Mullin is a strong supporter of public education having been a classroom teacher for many years. He is currently the Assembly Education Committee chair. He has always listed to all sides of an issue and has not had problems disagreeing with the teachers if he feels that they are wrong on an issue. This means he has not been a knee-jerk vote for teachers but has been extremely fair and balanced. Because he knows public education and believes in it strongly, he has voted and more importantly, spoken-out against legislation that is harmful to K-12. Recently Assembly member Ted Lieu sponsored legislation that would have penalized school leaders over school safety plans. Mullin realized how harmful this bill was and did not vote in favor of it. In other CIF legislation that we adamantly opposed, he supported our position and did not vote for the bill. Because he knew what the reality was at a site and district level, he was able to speak against the bill knowing what its impact would be. His voice ultimately killed the bill.

He has been very supportive of ACSA and has granted us complete access to him and his staff. He is always respectful even if he disagrees with our position. His office calls us to get our input on issues both on budget and legislation. For several years he sponsored legislation that required the state to repay the money taken from STRS to balance the budget. He sits on the State Allocation Board. He has been a wonderful voice for K-12 education as its leader in the Assembly.
