“Our members enthusiastically support a federally approved district waiver option for any district in the state that wishes to apply,” said ACSA President David Gomez. “Everyone agrees NCLB is no longer serving the needs of our students. Rather than shy away from accountability, the tenants of a consortia based California waiver focuses upon deeper learning and is grounded in research. ACSA embraces the three critical principles of the waiver, which are: College and Career Ready Expectations for All Students, Differentiated Recognition, Accountability and Support for Schools and Supporting Effective Instruction and Leaders.
“The moral imperative highlighted in Michael Fullan’s work and the recommendations from Superintendent Torlakson’s Greatness by Design report guided the development of the waiver proposal. ACSA has been strongly committed to NCLB relief either through a state waiver or local district waivers for more than a year. We have continued to build strong partnerships with CORE as well as federal administration officials. Some fear there will be no accountability but this is just not true. The proof will be in the data and the consortia will share and partner best practices. This is a ground breaking opportunity and a first of its kind nationally. ACSA will be supporting our members as we embark on this exciting opportunity.”
