At ACSA’s most recent Delegate Assembly, association leadership took part in an exercise on the recent findings from “Getting Down to Facts,” the 22 studies on resource and governance reform published by SRI International.
Delegates heard from ACSA Legislative Advocate Laura Jeffries, who is heading ACSA’s advocacy efforts to ensure that any governance reforms go hand-in-hand with the resources schools need.
Jeffries has pored over the reports and distilled them down to the key findings and solutions contained in each. ACSA delegates were given packets with this information and asked to determine the recommendations they deem most important. They were also asked to take this information back to their regions for discussion and input.
The assembly was also briefed on ACSA’s multi-pronged effort in this area. It is expected to be a long procedure, as Gov. Schwarzenegger and legislative leaders have already indicated they will not take on any significant reform efforts until next year, which they have dubbed “The Year of School Reform.”
Already rumblings have been heard in the initial wake of the reports’ release that the governor’s administration might try to propose governance reforms without additional resources. ACSA and the Education Coalition are countering by showing how resources are needed as much if not more than reforms, as California currently ranks 43rd in the nation in education funding.
