The California Association of Latino Superintendents and Administrators is hosting its Fall 2010 Conclave at the University of California, Davis Oct. 15.
The CALSA Conclave focuses on the important issues of practice concerning the education of linguistic minority and non-linguistic minority Latino students. CALSA has organized this conclave in collaboration with UC Davis in order to share information and foster partnerships between school district leaders and researchers at universities and other organizations.
During the Conclave, papers will be presented that ask two key questions: What practices and strategies does research validate as effective in raising the school achievement of Latino students who are English learners? What practices and strategies does research validate as effective in raising the school achievement of Latino students who are not English learners? This may be within areas of effectiveness including instructional strategies, professional development/growth, assessment, community/home partnerships or district-wide strategies. They may also focus on the elementary, middle or high school levels.
Papers selected for presentation will undergo a blind reading by a panel of recognized researchers selected by CALSA. Selected papers will reflect a clear research hypothesis and/or questions that are pertinent to the education of linguistic minority and non-linguistic minority Latino students; appropriate theoretical framework for the study and comprehensive and logical inclusion of prior research; clearly explained research methods that are appropriate to the question under study; conclusions that are described clearly and are supported by data; and well-articulated discussion of the potential impact of the research on the education of linguistic minority and non-linguistic minority Latino students or on the field of educational research.
A sample of papers that were presented at the previous CALSA Conclave are featured in the September/October issue of Leadership magazine. These include “Integrating Science and ELD,” by Delores Beltran and Eugenia Mora-Flores; “What Schools Can Do About the Dropout Crisis,” by Louie Rodriguez; and “Explaining the Science Achievement Gap,” by James Valadez.
