Diverse groups support May 19 special election ballot measures
ACSA members are not the only ones aware of the uncertain budget situation. A group of organizations has gathered under the banner Budget Reform Now to call for passage of the propositions on the May 19 special election ballot.
Member help needed in Social Security reform
ACSA is calling on members to urge federal policymakers to repeal two provisions of Social Security law that reduce retirement benefits for retired educators, police officers, firefighters and other public employees.
Plan launched to develop digital textbooks
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has launched an initiative to make California the first state in the nation to offer free, open-source digital textbooks, and ACSA supports any efforts in its ongoing campaign to curtail textbook costs.
Bill aims to lower vote threshold for parcel tax
ACSA has issued strong support for Senate Constitutional Amendment 6, Simitian, D-Palo Alto, which would establish a 55 percent vote threshold for local parcel taxes, identical to the vote threshold for passage of local school facility general obligation bonds.
UTLA’s new 95/5 bill pulled
The United Teachers Los Angeles-sponsored Assembly Bill 972, Strickland, R-Camarillo, was set to bring back the issue of 95/5. However, the bill was pulled from the Assembly Education Committee for lack of votes.
