RtI will be focus of pre-conference sessions

The California Association of School Psychologists’ Dec. 4 Winter Conference in San Jose will be the site of an ACSA-CASP RtI Project program implementation workshop, one of three offered throughout the state.

These one-day workshops are designed for educators and their teams that are in the first phases – one to three years – of Response to Intervention implementation. The workshops will highlight successful strategies for building program capacity and sustainability within the context of an RtI philosophy.

Presenters include Carin Contreras, former principal and director of instructional services for Roseville City SD; Deeds Gill, RtI coordinator for Fresno USD; Jennifer Gaviola, former secondary literacy coach and director of special services in Madera USD; and Cathie Christo, professor of psychology at Sacramento State University.

The workshop will also look at how RtI should work and fit with NCLB, standards-based instruction, developing professional learning communities, and everything else that’s being done to increase student achievement.

Response to Intervention is a multi-tiered approach to help struggling learners make academic progress in a closely monitored program that evaluates in stages to determine need for further research-based instruction in general or special education.

Resources for RtI implementation are available at www.casponline.org.

The CASP Winter Conference will include other information on RtI and reading interventions, as well as sessions on cultural competence for school psychologists; cultural considerations and emotional disturbance; succeeding in the first years; and preparing useful and legally defensible reports.

Another RtI Workshop is scheduled Nov. 5 as a pre-conference session to the ACSA Leadership Summit. A third workshop is scheduled for Feb. 6 in Visalia as a stand-alone event. Project consultants are also available for district-specific trainings and consultations.

Registration for the one-day Building Capacity for Response to Intervention: Developing Strategies for Sustained Outcomes workshops is separate from ACSA and CASP events. For more information, registration and pricing, visit www.casponline.org.
