Workshop set to help supervisors lead principals

Principal leadership is second only to teacher quality in its impact on student achievement. Unfortunately, those who supervise principals often have little opportunity to hone their skills, and principal supervision processes are often neglected at best.

The School Leadership Development Division at the New Teacher Center, in collaboration with ACSA, is pleased to offer a new two-day workshop for supervisors of principals entitled “Supervising Principals: Building Principals’ Capacity to Lead” at ACSA’s Burlingame office Nov. 19-20.

The goal of the workshop is to build the capacity of principal supervisors to nurture the growth of site leaders using “Blended Coaching” in formal and informal supervision and evaluation processes situated in aligned district systems. Outcomes for the workshop are as follows:

• Examine personal practice in relation to supervision of principals.

• Understand characteristics of effective and systemic supervision and evaluation models.

• Practice supervisory behaviors using Blended Coaching.

• Engage in an inquiry process through participation in a professional learning community of supervisors of principals.

• Acquire practical tools and processes for effective supervision and evaluation.

• Reflect upon and interact with supervision challenges.

• Leave with a follow-up plan focused on a case-study principal.

Past participants in the workshop have said:

“This workshop has really made me reflect upon my practice, and I am now thinking about changes we will make in our district.”

“Thank you for this learning experience. It will certainly prompt change in my practice as superintendent.”

“Great job… I loved it…an opportunity to learn, laugh and reflect with other leaders as I learned the essential components of principal supervision.”

“I can’t wait to share with others at the district office.”
