Assembly member Gene Mullin receives Friend of Education award

Assembly member Gene Mullin, D-South San Francisco, has been named the 2008 Friend of Education by the Association of California School Administrators.

Mullin was a classroom teacher for many years, and he currently chairs the Assembly Education Committee. His approach to education issues has always been considered to be fair and balanced by the education community. He is seen as a legislator who will fight what is right for California students. Indeed, Mullin has been a good voice for K-12 education as its leader in the Assembly.

“We appreciate Assembly member Mullins’ ongoing focus on education,” said ACSA Vice President for Legislative Action Alice Petrossian. “He has made our students his top priority. His support for ACSA’s legislative platform makes him a true friend. During times of budget crisis, friends like Assembly member Mullins are crucial to education.”

Gene Mullin was elected in 2002 to represent the 19th District of the California State Assembly, after spending seven years as a South San Francisco City council member, two years of which he served as mayor.

Before that, Mullin worked at South San Francisco High School, where he taught government and coached basketball for 32 years. His former students often describe him as “my favorite teacher.” He holds a Lifetime Secondary Teaching Credential from University of San Francisco.

“Gene Mullins is one of those legislators who comes along all too rarely, who actually has a firm grasp on education issues because of his time spent out working in the field,” said ACSA Assistant Executive Director for Governmental Relations Karen Stapf Walters. “He has a great belief in the importance of education and the value of leadership to our state’s children and a good understanding of what needs to be done to get California’s educational funding back to the levels of greatness it once had.”

The Association of California School Administrators has 23 councils and committees and represents more than 16,000 superintendents, principals, vice-principals, classified managers and confidential employees throughout the state. It is a member-driven organization committed to improved student performance and educational leadership in California’s public schools.
